Music Therapy


Music therapy can be defined as the use of music to promote well being of an individual. Research shows that music has a profound effect on an individual’s body, affecting the brain wave in positive ways.   • Research indicates that a strong beat will resonate with the brain waves thus bringing about a calming effect. In addition to that, the beat brings about sharper concentration and alert thinking.
  • Music affects the heart rate and breathing of an individual. Change in brain waves affects the normal bodily functions of an individual. The calming effect of music bringing about slowed beating, slow heart rate and activation of the body’s relaxation responses. Music therapy is also important in counteracting the harmful effects of stress thus bringing about good health.

Various Categories of Music Therapy

1. Improvising


The first category of therapy is known as improvising. In this scenario, the individual composes his or her own music and sings to it. The client may improvise music according to the therapist’s directions.

2. Recreating Music


The second therapy is known as recreating music. In this scenario, the individual plays pre composed music, This music experience involves a number of aspects which include initiating musical phrase, using musical notations, taking music lessons or performing a piece of music from memory.

3. Composing A Music State


The third category of music therapy entails composing a music state. In this scenario, the individual comes up with lyrics, songs or other instrumental pieces.The therapist will help the client by generating a tone or taking responsibility of technical aspects of the composition.

4. Listening


The fourth category is known as listening. Here the individual reacts to recorded or live music. The listening experiences focuses on intellectual, emotional and physical aspects of the music. The individual may react to recorded music in a number of ways. This includes perceptual tasks, free movement, structured movement or meditation.

In addition to these music therapies, the therapist may engage clients in verbal conversations.

Clients are encouraged to talk about music, reactions, thoughts and images evoked during the experience. Additionally, clients are encouraged to express themselves through various arts among them drama, drawing, painting and poetry.
